Storytime book of the month for January – Rudie Nudie
There are many ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Rudie Nudie is a fun and entertaining picture book that captures the exuberance of small children who enjoy a nude romp at bathtime. With its combination of lively text and delightful illustrations, it depicts the bathtime to bedtime routine for a small girl and her baby brother.
The story begins with the pair of them in the bath tub together. Following some splishing and splashing and a quick towel dry from their mum, the children race off out the bathroom door. They joyously prance through the house in all their innocent glory and outside into the garden. Once back inside, their mum helps them into their pyjamas and the story ends with the two children tucked up in bed.
Written and illustrated by Emma Quay the story is both rhythmic (but not rhyming) and playful. The illustrations are pencil sketches set against peachy pink and other pastel backgrounds. The illustrations portray the freedom and energy of childhood in a charming manner which children (and parents) are sure to relate to.
Rudie Nudie was shortlisted in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards, 2012 and in the Australian Book Industry Awards was the Book of the Year for Younger Children, 2012. With the heat of summer upon us there are bound to be “rudie nudie” romps going on in households across the State. Stay cool and happy reading!
