Pram Jams with Mary – Senses

Hello and welcome to my first blog for this year. This month I am going to talk about our “five senses” and how important they are. We need to explain to children how our senses help us in everyday life. Our eyes help us see, our ears let us hear, our hands let us feel, our noses let us smell, and our tongues help us to taste things. We should start to stimulate babies senses straight away.

Newborns:

Even before your baby is born they will be tuning into your voice and different sounds. By the time he/she enters the world they will recognise your voice. There are so many sensory games and activities to help your baby’s development:

  • sight –       hanging a mobile above their cot or pram gives them something interesting to look at and touch.
  • hearing – singing and talking to your baby is so important. Playing soothing music is great to help babies who have trouble sleeping.
  • tasting –   breast or bottle feeding. When they start solids you can watch their faces to see the different faces they pull.
  • feeling –   gently stroking and massaging your baby is a beautiful way to soothe and reassure him/her.
  • smelling – babies are sensitive to smell from the start. They will get to know your scent straight away. They are be able to smell breast milk.

Toddlers:

The outside world shapes your child’s development in so many ways. Drawing their attention to the “five senses” and discussing them will help increase their understanding of them. It is important to talk to your child about how his/her senses are used in everyday life and make it into a fun day such as “describe a day at the beach with all five senses” and see what they come up with:

  • smelling – the sea air
  • hearing –   the waves crashing against the rocks
  • tasting –     the sea water or an ice cream
  • feeling  –    the sand at the beach in his/her hands
  • seeing –      the seagulls flying in the sky

There are so many fun sensory games and things to make that will boost your baby’s development. We at the library have made sensory bottles.

They are really easy to make. Just get some old bottles and wash them out and then fill them up with things like rice, environmental friendly dish washing liquid, water &buttons. Always make sure the lid is glued on so nothing can come out. A great website with sensory bottle ideas is:  https://www.pinterest.com/edytheburroughs/sensory-bottles/

We have so many books in our collection to help children, and to make reading to them fun. Some of the books I have selected are:

The rhyme I have picked for this blog is:

Heads and Shoulders
Touch each body part with both hands and follow the action described.

Head and shoulders, knees and toes.
Knees and toes, knees and toes
Head and shoulders, knees and toes
Make your feet go stamp, stamp, stamp.

Nose and elbows, feet and waist
Feet and waist, feet and waist
Nose and elbows, feet and waist
Make your hands go clap, clap, clap.

I look forward to seeing you all at Pram Jams and hearing your comments.
