Hi and welcome to my Pram Jam Blog. This month I am going to talk about brushing your teeth. We all want our children to have nice healthy teeth and gums, so we can start by giving them a good dental routine from an early age and by trying to make it fun. Even before your baby’s first tooth has appeared it is a good idea to start cleaning their gums with a clean, damp cloth (it is also a good way of getting them used to having someone touching their mouths).
When they start getting teeth replace the cloth with a small, soft toothbrush and just use water on it not toothpaste. Do not use toothpaste until they are about two years old. Try and make brushing their teeth a fun part of your daily routine. Children should start brushing their own teeth at about two years old. You will know when you think your child is able to brush their teeth on their own with you watching. Parents should supervise them until they are about eight years old. Try and encourage them to brush for about two minutes. Watch them and remind them not to miss any of their teeth especially the back ones. You can always sing a rhyme whilst you are brushing their teeth to make it fun.
Here are a few brushing rhymes:
Brushing (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)
Here’s my toothpaste
Here’s my brush
I won’t hurry, I won’t rush.
Working hard to keep teeth clean
Front and back and in between
When I brush for quite a while
I will have a happy smile
The Toothbrush Song ( to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Brush, brush, brush your teeth
Brush them everyday.
We put toothpaste on our brush
To help stop tooth decay.
Floss, floss, floss your teeth.
Floss them every day!
Using the string to clean between
Keeps the plaque away!
Clean, clean, clean your teeth.
Clean them every day!
Your teeth will sparkle for years to come
In the most beautiful way!
Brush, brush, brush your teeth.
Brush them every day!
Happy, healthy teeth you’ll have
If it’s done this way.
There are lots of great websites you can visit on dental care. A really good one is The Western Australian Department of Health, Dental Health Services
There are lots of good books on making brushing your teeth fun and the ones I have chosen are:
