We look forward to seeing you at your local library soon!

Little Emotions

Moving on to my blog post for this round… It’s been a bit of an odd summer here, the weather is cooler than usual but that hasn’t equated to a calm holidays, not by any stretch. There are large sections of the Cockburn community who are feeling rather fractured at the moment. Tensions are frayed, emotions are heightened, and opinions are flying like cranky Carnaby’s cockatoos.

The processes and actions regarding the Roe8/Perth Freight Link extension set in place by the Barnett government over recent months have been difficult to witness, and many of us are struggling to cope with intense differences of opinion between fellow humans. And then there’s our little ones, who seem able to pick up on the general mood of those around them and amplify it in their own special, big-noises-come-from-small-lungs way.

This has inspired my blog topic this round, and I thought that I’d touch on how we can support those little emotions and perhaps, as a side effect, help to guide our own interactions with those who hold differing opinions, both in person and online.

The nice book / David Ezra Stein

A Maudie and bear story : making up / Jan Ormerod ; illustrated by Freya Blackwood

Happy, sad, silly, mad / written by John Seven ; illustrated by Jana Christy

Emma / Jennifer Adams

These are my current top picks from the Board Books collection, for interactive reading with younger babies. Each title touches on giving toddlers and babies labels for their feelings, and how to share those feelings with the people around them.

Three little words / by Clemency Pearce ; illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw.

Knuffle Bunny : a cautionary tale / by Mo Willems

Too busy sleeping / Zanni Louise & Anna Pignataro

Feelings! / Tad Carpenter

Feelings! / Tad Carpenter

Everyone / Christopher Silas Neal

The colour monster / Anna Llenas

And these are my picks from the Junior Kindy collection, great for reading at bed time or quiet time with babies, toddlers and bigger siblings. They’re a little more involved and lengthy, but each one is wonderful!

Tears heal : how to listen to our children / Kate Orson

Best Start / Lynn Jenkins

Best start : understanding your baby’s emotional needs to create the best beginnings / Lynn Jenkins

For mums and dads and other carers, I wanted to suggest these titles. They’re not too heavy (in particular Best Start is a very easy read) but well worthwhile, just for a little guidance and background knowledge about emotional development in the early years.

How about some songs?  But of course, of course. Music is such a wonderful expressive tool to add to your emotions toolkit 🙂  These two are good fun, and you can change them up to suit your family.

I have feelings lyrics

So there you have it, a brief blog on emotions and babies. Perhaps these books will help us adults to keep our cool a bit better when we come across other grown ups who aren’t keeping theirs 😉

I present the Pram Jam sessions at Coolbellup Library on Mondays during school term, and have worked with Cockburn Libraries since 2003 (with a few breaks here and there to look after my brood of boys). I have a special interest in early childhood development and the practice of attachment parenting - if you are curious I can always point you towards my favourite books in the parenting collection.
