Pram Jam with David – CHRISTMAS IS COMING!

Hi everyone. I was planning to do a completely different blog this week but then I realised …

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!

What?! It’s December already … when did that happen? So, I’ve thrown my current topic out the window (well, actually I’m going to save it for next time – heh, heh) and have decided to pip everyone else at the post and put some Christmas cheer out there with some timely book selections and rhymes.

I could go on about the wondrousness of Christmas time, the fact I’ve never seen a “White Christmas” (thank you Bing Crosby!) or wax lyrical about the time a Christmas cracker nearly burned my eyebrows off … but we’ve all been there, so let’s just get on with the blog.

To start off with, what would Christmas be without a visit from Santa? Luckily we’ll never know because Santa is TOTALLY REAL and comes down the chimney every year and delivers ALL our presents. YAY!

My first choice is a new book with some local flavour. Santa is coming to Perth / written by Steve Smallman ; illustrated by Robert Dunn and Stefano Tambellini.

My second choice is one of a small number of new Christmas board books I have been holding on to so that I can put them out for the last Pram Jam of the year (Wednesday, 17th December). Since we are counting down to Christmas why not count down reindeer as well in this fun and jolly counting board book.

Now for some rhymes, or rather this time, Christmas carols:

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow,
 in a one-horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
 laughing all the way.
 Bells on bobtail ring
 making spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.

(Chorus)
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
 jingle all the way!
Oh! what fun it is to ride
 in a one horse open sleigh, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
 jingle all the way!
Oh! what fun it is to ride
 in a one horse open sleigh.

And always a great choice to finish off the caroling:

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin;
Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer
We won’t go until we get some;
We won’t go until we get some;
We won’t go until we get some, so bring some out here

We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In case I don’t see you at the last two Pram Jams of the year, let me just say the sincerest best wishes to you and your families from all the staff at Cockburn Libraries.

Hope you have a Very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! I’ll see you then.

    Excellent post David. Just one question-
    I don’t have a chimney, so how is Santa going to get in to give me all my presents?

      Well Chantelle, that’s an excellent question. It’s a little complicated so stick with me.

      Basically, you know how Santa’s sleigh flies through the air on magical dust that comes off the reindeer like golden glitter? Yes … well, Santa and his elves have supplies of all sorts of magical dusts at the North Pole, one of which he uses to get into peoples homes. (It’s okay when Santa does it, for the rest of us it’s against the law).

      A lot of houses built these days don’t have chimneys, as you so helpfully pointed out, and even if you have a chimney it might not have been built to the official Santa friendly specifications.

      So, the special chimney dust Santa uses can do two things: it can widen a chimney that’s too narrow so he can get down; or, when sprinkled on the roof and watered in by a reindeer it can make a chimney magically sprout out of the roof!
      This can be tricky, though, because the chimney only lasts for a few moments before it shrinks back into nothingness and disappears without a trace, so Santa has to be super quick and not stop for the cookies and milk; also, he has to make sure he sprinkles the magic dust directly above the room with the Christmas tree in it, otherwise he could end up anywhere and wake everyone up and spoil the surprise.

      But Santa is a professional and that almost never happens.

      I hope that answers your question, Chantelle.
      Ho!Ho!Ho! Merry Christmas!

        David,

        Wonderfully informative post.
        But, how do the reindeer water this magic dust into the roof exactly?

          Another excellent question, thank you Jessica. Isn’t it a blessing to be surrounded by so many inquisitive folks?

          In answer to your question, well … you see … um … the thing is … er … with the watering … hmmm …

          Oh my gosh! Look at the time! I totally forgot I have to be somewhere right now. Sorry Jessica, I’m afraid I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

          Watering isn’t a problem for RAINdeer.
