Pram Jam with David – Sight and SOUND!

“Hello pram jam, my old friend
I’ve come to sing with you again
Because a lyric softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the rhyme that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of …

[Adapted from “Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel]

Hello my old friends, welcome back for another pram jam post with yours truly. Today’s post is going to be about Sight and Sound – that is to say, books that make noise! Why on earth would you want to borrow a noisy book, I hear you say? Well, because they are fun, interactive, will stimulate your baby with pictures (sights) and sounds – which, when combined with words and names, will promote their early brain development, and more.

Like a lot of board books, most sound books like to follow a theme so that you can concentrate on one concept at a time and make associations between similar or related things.

Children, even from the youngest age, always seem to be fascinated with (and occasionally frightened by) animals, so why not start there:

Wild animals / illustrations by Amandine Notaert.

In Wild Animals, children will learn to recognise what sound their favourite wild animal makes – including the lion, the elephant, and more! It also has a “photo album” at the back in order for children to remember it more easily.

Farm animals / illustrations by Amandine Notaert.

With this title, Farm Animals, children will learn to recognise what sound these common animals – the rooster, the pig, or the cow – make. It also has a “photo album” at the back of the book.

Also relating to nature but in your own back yard, you might like:

Garden sounds / words by Sam Taplin ; illustrated by Federica Iossa.

A delightful and enjoyable sound book filled with gentle sounds of the garden. A beautiful book to entertain young children, while allowing them to explore the world around them.

Possibly a book about sounds you already hear too often:

Noisy toys peekaboo! / written by Dawn Sirett.

A brand new adventure in the Noisy Peekaboo! lift-the-flap series. Flaps hide exciting objects and animals, from trains to ducks, light-activated sounds, and fun words which will have your little toddler joining in in no time: Toot toot! Quack quack! A way for toddlers to play along with the noisy toys but without the mess!

Some sounds you might not want to hear but definitely don’t want to smell:

Toilet time for boys / Chris Jevons.

Toilet time for girls / Chris Jevons.

Potty and toilet training can be a stressful time for both parents and children. Toilet Time for Boys and Girls is a chance to take some of the stress out of the situation, with fun illustrations and a ‘flush’ button which emulates the sound of … well, I won’t spoil the ending!

O-kay. Let’s lift the tone with some more elegant noises. Get that baby tuxedo on and settle in for an evening of highbrow classical music with:

First book about the orchestra / words by Sam Taplin.

An original first introduction to the orchestra, with sound buttons on each page, to bring all the orchestral instruments to life. The sound may not live up to a WASO (WA Symphony Orchestra) performance but the sound quality on this title is surprisingly good. You’ll be clapping for an encore!

I'm a library officer at Success Public Library. My main claims to fame are that I process new books and I present our local Pram Jam sessions. I've recently taught myself to (sort of) play the ukulele for these sessions - luckily, a lot of rhymes only seem to need two chords!
