Pram Jam with Beth – More of the SSS Sillies

SSSssssSSSSS! This is a bit of an oopsie carry on from last week’s Storytime with Karen – Silly blog from last week, because silly is as silly does (and someone didn’t check the blog history before she started composing this last minute replacement post… doh)!

Dear Pram Jam parents, are you feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? Need to find a way to unwind? That’s where I am at today… just a bit overwhelmed by deadlines, dates and disappointments.

First of all I am gonna try my little SSS trick:  Swinging, Singing, and Socialising

Swinging at the park I mean! South Beach is our favourite mummy-child side by side swings, at the pirate ship, but I am sure that Cockburn has a huge number of double swings to choose from as well – I think that Indigo and I will need to do a bit more exploring and find some new spots!
Singing can and should be done pretty much anywhere, and anytime, and even any song – there is a place for ABBA and The Wiggles everywhere 😉
Socialising is such an important part of maintaining balance as a parent, and it’s possibly one of my most difficult challenges. I always feel as though I should be at home achieving All.The.Things when I go out with friends, and feel like I am missing out on valuable catch ups when I stay home to Do.The.Things…

If all of this doesn’t improve my stress levels, and I find myself sinking deeper in my sorrows, I might try a swim… or shopping… or some silliness!

The first 4 weeks of this term have whizzed by all too quickly and I have found it very hard to prioritise my time and tasks. Which is probably why I am once again writing my blog post at the very last possible minute, and have even thrown out my planned topic (Call & Response songs and books – stay tuned for a link to that one in the future! It’ll be a good one, I’m certain 😉 ) in favour of this Silly blog. I need something light hearted and cheery today!

Caring for tiny humans is stressful. Remember to take care of yourself as well!

Singing silly songs, reading funny books and getting out of the house and socialising with like-minded friends are my immediate go-to’s when I’m feeling overwhelmed by the stuff… so here are a few suggestions for silly books that we can share with the babies:

Book Cover - Wash your face in orange juice : and other silly songs ” title=“View this item in the library catalogue

There are, in reality, a seemingly endless supply of silly children’s books and songs out there. Nick Sharratt is an eternal favourite and should always be on standby. These books provide a very important opportunity for us to joke and play with our kids, in a light-hearted, joyful way. There are so many ways to encourage creativity and playfulness when we’re singing songs and reading together, and for our babies to see us enjoying ourselves with language and text reinforces for them that reading and speaking are fun activities.

With a little less focus on the ‘teach you child to read before school’ message and more just on sharing a love of reading with your baby, I suggest taking a look at this title (if you ever get the chance to read a not-children’s book again!), written by Mem Fox (of Where is the Green sheep? fame!):

Our favourite silly songs

We sing so many silly songs, my husband jokes that we have a song for pretty much any key word!  My 4 year old (sniff, where did that time go?) loves to play rhyming games mixing up our known rhymes, so, say we start with

Ride a cockhorse to Banbury Cross, to see a White Lady upon a white… sheep!
With rings on her fingers and bells on her feet, she shall make music in her bright red Jeep!

We will also play with non-sense words, and change the starting letters of words to make up new ones. Sometimes there’s some great surprises in what rhymes and I am loving hearing his vocabulary expand!

Well, that’s it from me for this week then. I hope that you’re able to have some silly fun with your little ones today, decompress and relax a bit while at the same time sharing and growing your love of reading with your bub.
