Storytime with Melody – Nursery Rhymes

This week’s blog is all about Nursery Rhymes.

Reading nursery rhymes with your children is a great way to develop speech and literacy, fine motor skills – and also to bond with young children.

The many and varied types of rhymes can help your child with all areas of learning. Counting nursery rhymes are a fun and effective way to help develop a child’s numeracy skills: for example, in the song “Five little monkeys”. Rhymes like “Old McDonald had a farm” can inspire engagement with the world around them – I know that’s where I learnt what sound a cow makes. Nursery-rhyme lullabies such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, little star” and “Rock-a-bye baby” are filled with soothing rhymes and rocking rhythms to relax your child or help them to sleep. Lullabies are among the earliest children’s songs recorded, and most centre around themes of nurturing and protecting your little one. (My wonderful nursery rhyme collection, 2015)

When the clock strikes one, it’s time for fun! Have fun every hour with a busy little mouse, a parade of curious animals, and a tick-tocking grandfather clock – and learn about telling time, too. (Harcourt, Inc. 2007)

My Wonderful Nursery Rhyme Collection

This beautiful collection of Nursery Rhymes will offer up something new every day to enjoy with your children. You will be reminded of many old favourites and your children will love listening and contributing to the rhymes.

Craft idea – Humpty Dumpty on his wall

You will need:

  • A4 Card in various colours
  • Cut up sponges in rectangle shapes for stamping
  • Brown/red paint for bricks
  • Humpty Dumpty stencil to cut out and colour / or draw your own
  • Scissors, textas, crayons, glue

Method

  • Start by dipping your sponges in the paint and stamping out a brick pattern
  • Then colour and cut out your humpty
  • glue him into the wall – or for fun, he may have already fallen!

Nursery Rhymes

Well now, when it comes to picking a rhyme for the Nursery Rhymes blog, my choices are not exactly limited. So, to make it worthwhile, here are two of my absolute favourites, that also involve some fun actions.

Row Row Row your boat
Row row row your boat (pretend to row your boat)
Gently down the stream
Merrily Merrily Merrily Merrily
Life is but a dream

Row row row your boat (pretend to row your boat)
Gently down the stream
If you see a crocodile (make a big crocodile snap with your arms)
Don’t forget to scream (throw your arms in the air and scream)
AARRGGHHH!!!

Incy Wincy Spider
Incy Wincy Spider, climbed up the water spout, (alternately touch thumb of one hand to little finger of other)
Down came the rain, (raise hands and wiggle fingers as you lower hands?
And washed poor Incy out. (sweep hands from side to side)
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain, (raise hands and sweep out to the sides)
And dried up all the rain, (raise hands and wiggle fingers)
And Incy Wincy Spider, climbed up the spout again. (repeat action from first line)
