Classic Listen – The Grapes of Wrath

I listened to John Steinbeck’s 1939  The Grapes of Wrath more out of a sense of obligation – this classic had been missed by the Literature Police of my highschool days – than any sense of eagerness to read a Pulitzer Prize & the Nobel Prize for Literature (1962) winning novel.  The fact that the book had been banned and burned at time of publication was an incentive – controversy is always interesting!
The Joad family’s journey from the dustbowl of Oklahoma to California in search of jobs and dignity makes for riveting listening.  John Chancer is the excellent reader of the story convincingly portraying the voices and accents of the many characters.

Don’t let the label ‘classic’ deter you from reading/listening to one of the finest novels of modern times.

Hi, despite having once hugged Hugh Jackman, shook hands with Prince Charles and chatted with Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, my day job is Adult Services Librarian at Spearwood Library. So if you have any programmes/events/clubs that you would like to see happening in your library, please let me know.
