I’m a dirty dinosaur – Shortlisted for the Early Childhood category in the 2014 Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards
From a child’s perspective, what’s not to love about a small, cheeky dinosaur and a whole lot of muddy mess! Ideal for the very young, this picture book by Janeen Brian, has simple, rhythmical text and is great for reading aloud.
The story is fun and engaging. We are introduced to a sweet dinosaur who starts his day with a dirty snout. Body part by body part, he gradually covers himself with mud, having loads of fun along the way. And of course, at the end of the day, the dirty dinosaur needs to give himself a wash. Making this title a perfect addition to either our “Bathtime” or “Dinosaurs” Storytime themes.
This book is also a visual delight. Ann James’ magic pencil and mud illustrations celebrate fun and messiness.
After sniffing, snuffing, shaking, tapping, stamping, splashing and sliding your way through the story, you might feel brave enough to try painting with mud as a follow-up activity. (A tip from “Adventures at Home with Mum” is to add some cinnamon and vinegar to the dirt you collect from your garden, to ensure you don’t encounter any nasties).
