Buteyko Method – Correcting Breathing
Brian Firth gave an introductory talk about the Buteyko Method today at Coolbellup Library and got me wondering about breathing through the mouth and over breathing.
There were a few tricky ideas to understand like why it’s necessary to increase the levels of Carbon Dioxide (I thought CO2 was bad for you) and instead of taking deep breaths we should be learning how to breathe silently through our noses. This is so that CO2 levels are normalised and oxygen is transferred into the blood stream in an efficient way. This simple method, he says, will help people with asthma, sleep apnoea, hay fever and other breathing problems. Brian runs regular Breathing Retraining Courses at Bracks Library in Melville and in West Leederville.
