Anime Update – Autumn 2015

We have a new batch of anime titles that have just hit the shelves, or are about to, and I thought I should give all you otaku out there a heads up because they are all worth a mention.

So who or what is worthy of your time and attention? Let’s take a look:

K-On! (TV series, season 1)

Summary: When Yui Hirasawa enters high school, she wants to join a club but can’t decide which one is right for her. Fortunately, the Light Music Club is desperate to find another member or else they’ll be disbanded! With the enticement of delicious snacks and assurances that no musical experience is necessary, Yui joins up, becoming the guitarist in this all-girl high school rock band. Together with Mio Akiyama on bass, Tsumugi Kotobuki on keyboard, and Ritsu Tainaka on drums, they’re going to rock the school and someday make it to the Budokan! Now, if only they can just put down the snacks long enough to practice…

This is a great slice-of-(school)-life/buddy series with a musical slant. If you were ever in a school band (or club of any kind), or wanted to be, this is a fun little trip down memory lane. If you are still in high school, it may just inspire you to learn a musical instrument, start a band or just to wring the most fun out of your youth.
I give it: 4 out of 5 rockin’ guitar riffs!

Jormungand. [dvd] The complete collection

Summary: Death is their business, and business is good. Jonah is a child soldier and the newest bodyguard for Koko, an international arms dealer with an entourage of hired guns. The cold-blooded kid hates Koko’s line of work, but following her into the darkest corners of the black market might be the only way he can find those responsible for his family’s slaughter.

This is an interesting series: the “good guys” do bad things and their actions, ethics and motives are questionable and unclear – to say the least! Unsurprisingly for the subject matter there is a lot of bloodshed, violence and dark-souled characters but it is set in a depressingly realistic world – assuming you’re a bit of a pessimist about human nature. It is definitely not for those looking for some light-hearted popcorn entertainment.
I give it: 3½ out of 5 flaming grenade launchers!

The following title isn’t on the shelf yet but it will be soon. It is on the catalogue already, so you can get in early and reserve it now.

Gankutsuou: The Count Of Monte Cristo

Summary: Born into an aristocratic family in Paris, Albert sets out on a journey with his best friend, Franz, to escape his privileged yet dull life. Travelling to Luna, a city on the surface of the moon, they meet the incredibly wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. Completely fascinated with The Count’s mysterious charm, Albert welcomes him into Paris high society. But soon Albert will discover the Count’s true motive – revenge…

Gankutsuou (literally translating as The King of the Cavern) is a futuristic retelling of the French literary classic The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. As you can imagine, any adaptation of this 1400+ page tomb cannot hope to cover all aspects of the plot or include every original character, but this series weaves an interesting and intricate web of machinations, plots and sub-plots that will keep most of us entertained to the finale.
One of the things I personally like most about this series is the striking and unusual visual style. Some might say it’s a bit too bright and lurid and it hurts their eyes to watch it, but they are philistines! It really is something you won’t have seen in animation art before, so give it a go.
I give it: 4½/5 revenge soaked daggers!

We have also added a few extra classic Studio Ghibli titles to our catalogue. I don’t think I need to say much about these titles as their quality in animation and storytelling speaks for itself.

If you have a question about the above titles, or know a great title you would like to request, please leave a comment.
