Children’s Book Week Review –  The Amazing True Story of How Babies Are Made

OK, let’s talk about sex education …

The Amazing True Story of How Babies Are Made

… How embarrassing – right? Well this book claims to be “embarrassment-free”! It’s a picture book resource designed to help parents have THAT talk about ‘the birds and the bees’.

Oh, the wonder of a good book!

Fiona’s book has been shortlisted in the Children’s Book Week 2016 Book of the Year Awards in the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books category. Prior to Fiona’s book, the go-to book for parents was Where Did I Come From? which was published in 1973! (Incredibly, it’s still the best-selling book on the subject!) And with one in every 26 babies in Australia now being made with the assistance of IVF there was definitely a need for an up-to-date book about how babies are made.

It’s aimed at children between 5 & 10 years-of-age. So I’m guessing that this is the appropriate time frame to tell children the amazing true story. Personally, however, I’m not sure how suitable it is for children five, six and seven years old. I know of an eight year old who read it from cover to cover, twice in succession, and thought it was great. And I read a review by a grandmother who gave a copy to her nine year old granddaughter and found it to be very age appropriate.

Fiona’s approach is funny and frank and factual.

While a lot of scientific and biological research went into Fiona’s book, she wanted it to be comical and to engage children with humour and honesty. A clown’s rainbow coloured pubic hair is certainly comical and a young boy’s declaration that his “willy is starting to wonka!” is funny.

At the same time how to make a human baby is fully covered. Facts about genitals, sex, fertilisation, pregnancy and childbirth are all included. So while it is entertaining to read, it is also accurate and informative.

In the context of sex education for children this book is ideal. It’s destined to become the new Australian go-to book for parents and is a very worthy contender for the Eve Pownall Award.

I completed my tertiary qualification in Library and Information Studies in 1991 and began my career as a Librarian at the Supreme Court Law Library in 1992. Later that same year, I took a position as a Reference Librarian at the Perth Public Library and have been working in public libraries ever since. I have become very interested in the importance of early literacy and the significant relationship between reading for pleasure and the future success of a child.
